Whitney Young HS on probation, coach suspended

The Illinois High School Association has suspended Chicago’s Whitney Young High School and placed its basketball coach on probation.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Illinois High School Association has suspended Chicago’s Whitney Young High School and placed its basketball coach on probation. The Chicago Sun-Times reports Friday that Tyrone Slaughter was suspended until Feb. 14. The school is on probation until January 2012. IHSA says the penalties are a result of a practice at Burr Ridge Middle School on Nov. 12, 2010. IHSA executive director Marty Hickman says Young’s athletic program could have asked for clearance to practice at Burr Ridge and would have been informed the rules didn’t allow it. Slaughter contends what Young did was not against the rules because there is no rule barring what the school did. Hinsdale South complained about the practice, contending it was a recruiting effort by Young. Hickman says there is no evidence of that. Copyright 2011 The Associated Press.
