RAPIDAN, Va. (AP) — Virginia will pay homage to an African-American ballplayer in the Baseball Hall of Fame with a historical highway marker. State officials and a baseball historian will be on hand Sunday during an unveiling ceremony at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Culpeper County, where Pete Hill was born in 1882. Banned from the whites-only major leagues, Hill became a star outfielder for African-American teams, including the Philadelphia Giants and the Chicago American Giants. Hill died in December 1951. He was inducted into the Cooperstown Hall of Fame in 2006. Copyright 2011 The Associated Press.
