Trial in Oakland journalist murder delayed again

The trial of a former Oakland community group leader accused of ordering the murders of three men, including a local journalist, has been suspended again.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The trial of a former Oakland community group leader accused of ordering the murders of three men, including a local journalist, has been suspended again.

The judge canceled proceedings Thursday because the prosecutor was out sick. The trial of Yusuf Bey IV, former head of Your Black Muslim Bakery, will resume Monday.

It’s the second time the testimony of the prosecution’s key witness, Devaughndre Broussard, has been interrupted by illness.

Broussard says he fatally shot two men in 2007 on Bey’s orders. He also alleges that Antoine Mackey, a bakery associate, helped him in the killings and committed a third murder himself.

Defense attorneys have called Broussard a liar.

When the trial resumes, the defense is expected to wrap up its cross-examination of Broussard, who already has been on the witness stand for five days.
