A standing ovation is how the game ended after the Chicago Sky broke their eight-game losing streak Tuesday night at Wintrust Arena, riding from the momentum Ariel Atkins brought in in her first game back since Jul. 14

The Sky defeated the Washington Mystics 78-64, improving to 8-21 on the season and 5-10 at home. Chicago dominated early, opening the game on a 25-8 run and outscoring the Mystics 25-10 in the first quarter, resulting in one of their largest first-quarter leads this season.

Elizabeth Williams led all scorers with 18 points and 10 rebounds, marking her second consecutive double-double. Kamilla Cardoso also was very aggressive this game, completing her seventh straight double-double, tallying 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Michaela Onyenwere also contributed 12 points, while Ariel Atkins made a strong return from injury. The veteran guard scored 15 points and five assists, including a clutch three-pointer in the fourth quarter to help the Sky maintain their lead. Chicago finished the game shooting 54% from the field and outscored Washington in the paint 52-42. 

“The biggest difference were the paint points,” forward Elizabeth Williams said, “Coming out we knew we wanted to punch first and try to get the ball inside.”

Washington took advantage of the Sky’s turnovers scoring 17 points off of their mistakes. Sonia Citron led Washington with 13 points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists. Kiki Iriafen added 10 points and six boards, while Shakira Austin, Jade Melbourne, and Sug Sutton each chipped in eight points.

The Sky used timely runs throughout the game to stay in control. The Sky went on a 14-6 run late in the third quarter and it lasted midway through the fourth helped push the lead out of reach, even as the Mystics responded with a 12-2 run to close the gap late.

Up next, the Sky close out their four-game homestand on Thursday, Aug. 7, when they face the Atlanta Dream at 7 p.m. CT. The Sky are 0-3 against the Dream this season and will look to build off their recent win.
