A summer food program is in place for Chicago kids from lower income homes. The annual program providing food to children 18 years of age or younger is designed to supplement services that give children free or low-cost meals during the school year. The commissioner of the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services, Mary Ellen Caron, says the summer assistance is needed now in the current economic slump more than ever. She says many families are struggling to fulfill the nutritional needs of their children. The Summer Nutrition Program relies on city, state and federal support. It began this week and runs through September 4. Participants can get free breakfasts, lunches and dinners at more than 200 locations around Chicago. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press.
