Students seek Winfrey's help for Mississippi River

High school students in southern Illinois say they’re reaching out to an unlikely person in their mission to better the condition of the Mississippi River’s levees.

WOLF LAKE, Ill. (AP) — High school students in southern Illinois say they’re reaching out to an unlikely person in their mission to better the condition of the Mississippi River’s levees.

A group of about 50 students from Shawnee High School first wrote to U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello and then Sen. Dick Durbin.

But now they’re seeking Oprah Winfrey’s help.

Jamie Nash-Mayberry is a social sciences teacher at Shawnee High School. He says the students will mail letters to the Chicago talk show host on Friday.

The river’s drainage systems have fallen into disrepair and could fail if there’s major flooding.

A Durbin spokeswoman says the senator and congressman are working together to set up a meeting with the students.
