The swimming pool at Palmer Park on the South Side opens Friday, and the park’s first ever water park is set to open shortly afterwards. Construction on the water park, which will have four water slides of varying heights, began in 2007 and completion was delayed because its parts supplier went out of business, so the Chicago Park District had to put the contract back up for bidding, said Alderman Anthony Beale, whose 9th ward includes Palmer Park, 201 E. 111th St. “We had hoped to have the water park completed by Memorial Day, but due to weather, it has been delayed,” Beale told the Defender. The Chicago Park District said it would be at least a couple of weeks before the water park is completed. “I estimate that the water park will be ready to go by July,” said Jessica Faulkner, a spokesman for the Chicago Park District. Other South Side parks with water parks are Washington Park, Fernwood Park and Rowan Park, Faulkner added. Funding for the $1.5 million water park at Palmer Park came from a state grant Beale said he secured with the help of state Representative Bob Rita, D-28th district, and former state Senate President Emil Jones Jr. ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender.
