A Southern Illinois University student wants to launch a scholarship fund meant to help children affected by crime involving their parents.
CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — A Southern Illinois University student wants to launch a scholarship fund meant to help children affected by crime involving their parents. As an agribusiness economics major from Chicago, Stephen Ross says his need-based scholarship would be for students at the Carbondale school who are in good academic standing. Expected recipients of the funds would be students whose parents can’t provide financial support because of crime, either because the parent or parents are in prison or because they are victims of a crime. Ross has called it the Peanut Scholarship Fund, drawing the name from the nickname of a boy whose father is incarcerated. Ross is friends with that dad. The first fundraiser will be Sept. 8 at the campus’ Student Center. Admission will be $2 and include a screening of the Norwegian film, "Troubled Water." Copyright 2010 The Associated Press.
