Salvation Army in Chicago reports dip in donations

The Salvation Army’s Chicago area division says donations through its Red Kettle Campaign are down 13 percent over last year.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Salvation Army’s Chicago area division says donations through its Red Kettle Campaign are down 13 percent over last year.

So far, the bell ringers have received about $4.1 million in those familiar red pots. That’s compared with $4.6 million last year at this time.

Spokeswoman Dee McKinsey believes bad weather and the economy are the culprits.

The Army’s Chicago area division stretches north to Rockford and includes the northwest corner of Indiana.

The Army receives approximately 70 percent of its donations for the year from the kettles. They’ll be out from Nov. 19 to Dec. 24.

The Salvation Army was created in 1865 in London. The group now serves people in more than 80 countries with hundreds of programs in institutions, hospitals, schools and other agencies.
