Rosa Parks Apartments now open

Ald. Walter Burnett speaks at a press conference and ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly built and opened Rosa Parks Apartments on the West Side. The complex will provide low-income families with affordable, quality housing.

A new energy efficient affordable housing apartment complex recently opened in the Humboldt Park community.

The ribbon cutting ceremony for Rosa Parks Apartments took place Thursday, with Department of Community Development officials, community leaders and other members of the development team in attendance.

The complex, a $27.2 million development, consists of eight buildings on scattered sites in the areas near Kedzie and Drake Avenues, Huron Street and Franklin Boulevard. The housing features eight one-bedroom, 36 two-bedroom, 45 three bedroom, and five four-bedrooms apartments ranging in size from 720 to 1,300-square-feet in size. Monthly rents are expected to be between $482 and $1,028.

Eight units will be provided with long-rental assistance from Chicago Low-Income Housing Trust Fund to make them affordable for low-income residents. Green design and building techniques were used to make the building more energy efficient and more affordable to maintain.

The housing’s developer will pursue qualification for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver designation from U.S. Green Building Council for the development’s water efficiency, sustainable site planning and overall use of energy materials and resources.
