Report: City council mostly voted with Daley

A report analyzing votes over the past four years shows the Chicago’s City Council has been a rubber stamp for Mayor Richard Daley.

CHICAGO (AP) — A report analyzing votes over the past four years shows the Chicago’s City Council has been a rubber stamp for Mayor Richard Daley.

The report released Tuesday by the political science department of the University of Illinois at Chicago shows the City Council voted with Daley on average 82 percent of the time. Only seven aldermen voted with Daley less than 70 percent of the time.

However, there are signs things may change for mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel.

For one, the City Council has already had big turnover.

Of the 50 aldermanic seats in last month’s election, only seven ran unopposed. Another 11 retired or left, much more than usual. And another 14 wards will have runoff elections on April 5, which could bring in more new members.
