Rainbow/PUSH concludes 38th convention

Today’s civil rights agenda was the focus of the 38th annual conference of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and Citizen Education Fund, which was held June 27-July 1 at the Hyatt McCormick Place in Chicago.

Today’s civil rights agenda was the focus of the 38th annual conference of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and Citizen Education Fund, which was held June 27-July 1 at the Hyatt McCormick Place in Chicago. The theme was “A More Perfect Union – Targeted Stimulus: The Key to Reconstruction” and it was acknowledged throughout the conference that a key element of the current civil rights agenda is to assure that the economic stimulus reaches the people who need it the most.

The conference brought together three members of the President’s Cabinet: Education Secretary Arne Duncan, HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

Other participants included: Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn; Illinois States Attorney Lisa Madigan; Cong. John Conyers (D-Mich.); Cong. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.); Cong. Danny Davis (D-Ill.); Cong. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.); NAACP President Ben Jealous; Jenigh Garrett, NAACP Legal Defense Fund; Gary Flowers, executive director, Black Leadership Forum; C. Virginia Fields, National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS; Judge Greg Mathis; the Rev. Otis Moss; Professor Charles Ogletree of Harvard University; Dr. Julianne Malveaux, president, Bennett College for Women and athletes such as NBA Hall of Fame member Kareem Abdul-Jabar and NFL Hall of Fame member Michael Haynes.
