FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) — A coalition of African American groups are calling on a prominent Orange County Republican to resign over an email she sent depicting President Barack Obama and his parents as chimpanzees.

The Orange County Register reports that about 25 people gathered Saturday outside the home of Marilyn Davenport, a member of the county’s Republican central committee.

The 74-year-old has said she had no racist intention when she sent the email of Obama’s face superimposed on a chimp’s with the tagline "Now you know why no birth certificate."

The chair of Orange County’s GOP has called for Davenport to resign but said a recall isn’t feasible because of the expense.
