At about 1:30 p.m., a police recruit combing the area near the 1400 blocks of South Kildare and Kolin Avenues hit gold when he came across a weapon hidden in overgrown brush near where the white Chevy Suburban SUV, that is a central part of this murder case, was parked.
Seven-year-old Julian King was found Monday fatally shot in the backseat of the SUV that was parked in the 1300 block of South Kolin Avenue, three days after Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson, and brother, Jason Hudson, were found slain inside their Englewood home in the 7000 block of South Yale Avenue.
Julian’s mother, Julia Hudson, found the bodies of her mother and brother, and reported her son and Jason Hudson’s white Chevy Suburban missing from the home.
Sources said all three victims were killed with a .45-caliber handgun.
Chicago Police Deputy Chief of Patrol Nicholas Roti said the weapon and other evidence will be tested by the Illinois State Police crime lab.
He would not confirm what kind of gun was found nor would Roti divulge the other "small bits of evidence" found at the scene.
Chicago police have named Hudson’s estranged husband, William Balfour, as a person of interest. Balfour, 27, is being held by the Illinois Dept. of Corrections on a parole violation. He spent several years in prison for attempted murder and vehicular hijacking. Parole officials said he failed to attend required anger management and substance abuse sessions.
The prison review board will consider the alleged violation on Nov. 10.
While Balfour maintains his innocence in the Hudson murders, sources said he stopped cooperating with the investigation.
No suspects have been named in the case, and Balfour remains the only person of interest, police said.
Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis said the department is not ruling out that others may have been involved. ______ Copyright 2008 Chicago Defender. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
