PITTSBURGH (AP) — Officials in Pittsburgh have offered to settle a civil lawsuit filed by a black high school arts student beaten by three white police officers last year.
But the attorney for Jordan Miles say the family isn’t interested in the city’s $180,000 offer to settle the suit prompted by the January 2010 beating.
The now-19-year-old Miles said he was chased and beaten by three plainclothes police officers while walking in a high-crime area. Miles said he ran because the officers never identified themselves as police.
The officers say Miles acted suspiciously and appeared armed but was actually carrying a soda bottle, not a gun.
A city investigation cleared the officers and they returned to work.
J. Kerrington Lewis says the family wants a trial to force tougher police misconduct policies.
