A newspaper that exposed the University of Illinois’ practice of admitting some politically connected applicants despite low test scores and other weaknesses is taking the school to court. The Chicago Tribune filed a lawsuit Tuesday in state court demanding the university release the high school grade point averages and standardized test scores of hundreds of applicants whose names were on a list because of their political connections. The paper wrote its stories after the school responded to an Illinois Freedom of Information request by turning over 1,800 pages of documents. But the school refused to release information about high school GPAs or ACT scores, saying that doing so would violate students’ privacy.
