Okla lawmaker decries move of civil rights agency

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A member of the Legislative Black Caucus is decrying a legislative plan to move the Human Rights Commission to the attorney general’s office. The Oklahoma House voted 61-32 this week for a bill to create an Office of Civil Rights Enforcement within the AG’s office and transfer the responsibilities of the Human Rights Commission to that new office. State Rep. Mike Shelton says the plan will politicize the office and "close the door on people who may have been discriminated against." The commission employs about 20 people and was created to promote equality through education and enforcement in the areas of employment, housing and public accommodations. Proponents say the move is part of an effort to streamline state government by consolidating agencies. Copyright 2011 The Associated Press.
