Authorities are telling people in Illinois what they’ve learned for themselves all too well this week: That it’s getting cold outside and you should take precautions to stay warm. Cook County’s Department of Public Health says the Arctic cold’s a reminder that falling temperatures pose health risks. The agency’s chief operating officer, Stephen Martin, Jr., says the elderly can be particularly vulnerable. He urges people to check on elderly neighbors or relatives frequently to make sure they’re OK. The department’s safety tips include watching for signs of frostbite, such as discolored or waxy feeling skin. And it warns that shoveling snow can be hard on heart. People clearing away snow should pace themselves and take regular breaks. Copyright 2009 The Associated Press.
