Off-duty officer kills burglar

An off-duty Chicago police officer shot and killed an armed intruder who confronted him in his home.

CHICAGO (AP) — An off-duty Chicago police officer shot and killed an armed intruder who confronted him in his home.

Wentworth Area Deputy Chief of Patrol Eddie Welch says the officer, who hasn’t been identified, was calling 911 early Friday to report the break-in when he was confronted by an intruder "with something in his hand."

Welsh says the officer fired his service weapon several times, killing the intruder.

Authorities say investigators recovered a weapon that belonged to the dead man, who hasn’t been identified.

According to Welch, the officer said someone knocked on his door and a window, and rang the doorbell shortly before the break-in.

Welch says after investigating, the officer went back to bed, but then heard someone kicking in a basement door.
