CHICAGO (AP) — A natural life in prison sentence has been handed a 49-year-old parolee found guilty of the Christmas Eve 2009 shooting death a 79-year-old man who was loading food into car to take to a family holiday gathering.

Cook County Circuit Judge James B. Linn called Lee Cration a danger and a menace before the sentence was handed down Thursday.

A jury convicted Cration of murder in September after watching video surveillance of the shooting of retired state employee and Chicago community activist Ralph Elliott.

Assistant State’s Attorney Barbara Dawkins argued for a life sentence for Cration, saying Elliott never had a chance to hand over money before he was shot.

Cration was paroled from prison a little over a year for a 1985 murder conviction when he shot Elliott.
