N.Y.'s Paterson: Transportation a major U.S. issue

N.Y. Governor David Paterson was among more than a dozen Democratic governors who attended a roundtable discussion on the economy hosted by the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Sen. Barack Obama, on June 20 in Chicago.

Paterson told Obama that transportation issues not only nag his state but are a national problem. “The average Canadian citizen has food travel about 500 miles before it reaches consumers’ plates,” Paterson said. “The United States is 1,500 miles.

That extra distance, the energy it takes to move food products, is one of the great expenses the country endures. With an upgraded transportation system, we can cut time and localize the movement of food products. It will save energy and improve transportation.”

Health care and ballooning oil and gas prices were among other issues brought up at brainstorming session, which was held at the Chicago History Museum.
