SPRINGFIELD, Mass.— A 15-year-old Springfield boy police say was backing away from an officer stepped into a street and was struck and killed by a car. The boy was trapped under the car and dragged about 50 feet Thursday night. Police and the car’s driver had to lift the vehicle off the youth, who died later at a hospital. Police say Delano Walker was one of three boys on bikes seen coming from a car dealer’s lot just after 10 p.m. on Thursday. As an officer approached, police say Walker got off his bike and assumed a fighting stance. When the officer got closer, he reached into his pocket and stepped into the street. Police said they recovered a knife from under Walker’s body. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
