Authorities have identified a man who Chicago police fatally shot after he tried to stab an elderly bystander during lunch hour downtown. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office says he was 45-year-old Jacob Paul Stolarz. A police officer also was hit by the shot fired by his own partner in the Thursday incident. He was wearing a bulletproof vest, so he wasn’t seriously hurt. Police have said the shooting occurred after one officer failed to disarm the suspect. His partner then fired his gun, hitting both Stolarz and the other officer. The elderly bystander wasn’t injured. The medical examiner’s office says Stolarz was pronounced dead at 1:09 p.m. Thursday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. ______ In photo: Chicago police monitor the scene where police shot an assailant who was menacing people with a knife in Chicago’s busy downtown theater district Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009.
