A 24-year-old South Side man was charged Friday with the fatal shooting of Chicago police officer Thor Soderberg in a police parking lot in Englewood. Bryant Brewer, of the 5800 block of South Wolcott Avenue, was charged with first-degree murder, and attempted murder and armed robbery of a person near the scene. Soderberg, 43, was shot in the head July 7 with his own gun during an altercation allegedly with Brewer in Englewood, police said. The 11-year police veteran was at the end of his shift shortly before 4 p.m. when he was approached by Brewer in the parking lot of a police building in the 6100 block of South Racine Avenue. The man disarmed the officer, shot him in the head and attempted an armed robbery nearby, police said. Officers in the building heard gunshots and fired at Brewer, who remains in Advocated Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. His injuries appeared to be non-life-threatening, police said. Soderberg was on a one-week deployment in the Englewood District, part of the Operation Protect Youth program. He is normally assigned to the training academy. He is the fourth Chicago police officer killed in the last 13 months. The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the police-involved shooting. Copyright 2010 Chicago Defender.
