Man breaks gang code, names friend as assailant

A dying Chicago man decided to break the “no snitch” rule of street gangs and accused a friend of firing the shot that fatally wounded him.

CHICAGO (AP) — A dying Chicago man decided to break the "no snitch" rule of street gangs and accused a friend of firing the shot that fatally wounded him. Authorities say Vince Hernandez accused 23-year-old Donte Streety of shooting him in the head. Streety is allegedly a member of the same gang Hernandez belonged to. Streety was ordered held without bail Wednesday on first-degree murder charges. Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Daniel Piwowarczyk says it is unclear what prompted the shooting on Sunday. He says Streety was meeting with the 30-year-old Hernandez when the shooting occurred. Prosecutors say when police arrived on the scene, Hernandez said "his boy Donte" had shot him. Streety was arrested shortly afterward. The statement by Hernandez is considered a "dying declaration," which makes it admissible at a trial. Copyright 2011 The Associated Press.
