
The Wildcats of Lake View are on theprowl in the weekly Public League baseball poll. Sparked by a recent 23-1 thumping of Lane Tech, Lake View is now ranked third in the poll. Defending city champion Whitney Young remains in the top spot of the poll while
Following Lake View is Clemente in fourth and Lane Tech fifth. Rounding out the top ten are Jones College Prep, sixth; Taft, seventh; Von Steuben, eighth; Kenwood Academy, ninth; and Hyde Park, 10th. Lake View’s victory over Lane Tech came after the Indians beat the Wildcats earlier in the season. Pitching has been the key to Lake View’s recent surge, which saw them reel off six straight victories at one point.
Their starting staff pitched five consecutive complete games with junior lefthander Bill O’Donnell setting the ace with three-hitter against Schurz. The Wildcats have also been a terror on the base paths, stealing 13 bases in that victory over Schurz. Lane Tech did manage to bounce back from their loss to Lake View with a 10-2 win over Von Steuben. Right-hander Bobby Gora earned the win for the Indians, striking out seven in six innings.
Head coach Chris Cassidy’s Whitney Young squad meanwhile solidified their No. 1 ranking in the poll with a 3-1 win over number two Simeon in a Jackie Robinson Conference South showdown. Leading the Dolphins to the win over the Wolverines was senior right-handed pitcher Jack Cinoman, who hurled a complete game allowing just two hits and striking out five.
Following the win over Simeon, the Dolphins continued their surge wit a 13-1 rout of Brooks. Righthander Jason Ormond allowed just two hits and struck out six in five innings while Troy White and Eric Tabb each had three hits. (AP)
