Judge refuse to advance start of torture trial

A federal judge has refused to reset the date of a former Chicago police official’s trial on charges that accuse him of lying about the torture of suspects.

A federal judge has refused to reset the date of a former Chicago police official’s trial on charges that accuse him of lying about the torture of suspects. Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow on Thursday had set the trial of former police official Jon Burge for May 10. At that time, she also turned down a request from federal prosecutors for a Nov. 30 trial date. On Friday, prosecutors asked Lefkow to reconsider, but she let the May 10 date stand. Burge had been set for trial Jan. 11 but his defense attorneys say he has prostate cancer and making him stand trial in mid-January would interfere with his treatment. Lefkow said she knew Burge could feel weak after his treatment. But she said the May 10 date is firm. Copyright 2009 The Associated Press.
