Former Illinois Senate President Emil Jones will not seek to succeed outgoing Mayor Richard M. Daley. In a statement Wednesday, Jones said after careful review of the “time and attention” needed to run a mayoral campaign, he’s decided “not to enter this race.” “Having given more than 36 years of public service to the citizens of this city and state, I am convinced that I now owe my time and attention to my family, especially my grandchildren,” said Jones. The 74-year-old Jones –– a mentor to then-state Sen. Barack Obama –– retired in 2009; his son succeeded him as senator in the 14th District. Copyright 2010 Chicago Defender
