A routine court appearance Thursday by a Cook County Jail inmate ended with three Cook County deputy sheriffs attacked and additional charges filed against the inmate. According to Steve Patterson, a spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff’s office, Jamal Smith, 28, was taken to the south suburban Bridgeview courthouse for a court appearance. He was already being held at Cook County Jail for weapons charges filed in October. Smith had been complaining about his handcuffs being too tight. Once at the courthouse Smith was placed in a holding cell, which is standard procedure for detainees waiting for their case to be called. Patterson said Smith began shouting threats to the sheriffs saying they would not be going home alive. And as sheriffs attempted to handcuff and remove Smith from the holding cell a scuffle occurred resulting in one officer bitten, one suffered a ruptured ligament and will need surgery and the third officer suffered a rotator cuff injury, Patterson added. A judge set Smith’s bond at $350,000 after he was charged with two counts of felony resisting arrest and one felony count for aggravated battery against a peace officer. Smith’s next court appearance is June 10. Copyright 2010 Chicago Defender
