Jackson calls campaign his most difficult

CHICAGO (AP) — Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. says his campaign against former one-term Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson was the most difficult of his career.

CHICAGO (AP) — Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. says his campaign against former one-term Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson was the most difficult of his career.

The son of the Chicago civil rights leader easily won the Democratic nomination in Tuesday’s primary election. With 80 percent of precincts reporting, Jackson had 71 percent of the votes, while Halvorson had 20 percent.

Halvorson called Jackson to concede.

Jackson says Halvorson mounted a very strong challenge against him. Jackson has won his district with an overwhelming majority ever since he first took office in 1995.

But the primary fight in the 2nd Congressional District was intense.

The new 2nd district extends to include parts of Halvorson’s old legislative and congressional districts. It includes Chicago neighborhoods, south suburbs and beyond Kankakee. The district is largely Democratic.
