JACKSON, Miss. — A prison inmate accused of conspiring to steal guns from a Mississippi police department wants to prevent federal prosecutors from using recorded conversations to convince a jury the weapons were sold in Chicago. Authorities say five machine guns and 11 pistols were taken by inmates in 2005 and 2006 from a locked closet at the Greenwood Police Department. Inmates broke into the closet while working at the police station as part of a community work program. Andre Redmond is accused of helping smuggle the 11 pistols out. Prosecutors say he hoped to sell them to his "Uncle Blood" from Chicago. Redmond’s attorneys want to prevent recorded calls from being used in his June 15 trial. A judge didn’t immediately rule on the matter. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
