Illinois State execs disappointed by budget cuts

Illinois State University officials say they’re disappointed with Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s decision to take back a $2.1 million budget increase planned for fiscal 2009.

Illinois State University officials say they’re disappointed with Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s decision to take back a $2.1 million budget increase planned for fiscal 2009.

ISU President Al Bowman says his administration put together a very conservative spending plan, given the state’s weak revenue outlook. He says losing the money means further austerity will be needed.

Bowman says Illinois State will slow spending, specifically by delaying implementation of an automated payroll system. A non-teaching hiring freeze also will continue. But Bowman says he intends to stick with a mid-year salary increase plan.

Last week, the Blagojevich administration asked Illinois’ universities to place 2.5 percent of their budgets in reserves. The cuts mean $35 million in budget losses for four-year universities.  AP
