Illinois SAT scores drip but essay shines

Illinois’ average SAT scores are down for the class of 2010, but there’s one bright spot.

CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois’ average SAT scores are down for the class of 2010, but there’s one bright spot. Test results released Monday by the College Board show that Illinois posted the highest average score in the nation on the essay portion of the SAT’s writing test. The state tied with Connecticut, Michigan and Minnesota. The bad news is that Illinois’ average writing score was still down despite the success on the essay portion of that test. The College Board says Illinois’ average writing score slid to 577, from 583 in 2009. The state’s average reading score dipped from 588 to 585, and the average math score dropped from 604 to 600. The top score for each test is 800 points. A spokeswoman for the Illinois State Board of Education notes that fewer than 6 percent of the state’s students take the SAT.
