Illinois marks campus fire safety month

September is Campus Fire Safety Month in Illinois.

CHICAGO (AP) — September is Campus Fire Safety Month in Illinois.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office says 102 students have died in 71 fatal off-campus fires nationally since 2000. The office says the mother of 22-year-old Chicago fire victim Tanner Osborn has started a group to call attention to campus fire safety.

Kathleen Moritz of Evergreen Park’s group is called LOOK UP! to remind students to look to see if smoke detectors are properly installed in student housing. There were no working smoke detectors in the apartment where her daughter was staying. This is the program’s fifth year.

This year the fire marshal’s office and LOOK UP! will spread the fire safety message to students at Western Illinois University on Sept. 22.
