The city is all set to begin its annual summer festival events. Kicking off the series of free entertainment that covers different music genres will be the Gospel Music Festival June 5 and 6 in Millennium Park downtown.
This year marks the first time in two decades that the festival will not be coordinated by Pam Morris who resigned last year from the Mayor’s Office of Special Events, which produces the festival. But with new staff and new features as part of this year’s festival, the city continues its tradition of bringing big names in the gospel music industry to gospel fest.
Ricky Dillard and the New G choir, Byron Cage, Hezekiah Walker & Love Fellowship Choir, The Caravans, Malcolm Williams & Great Faith and the legendary Richard Smallwood and Vision will take to the stage at gospel fest.
Grammy and multi-Stellar and Dove Award-winning gospel recording artist, writer and producer Fred Hammond will close out gospel fest Sunday night on the Pritzker Pavilion.
“Our events always reflect a merger of past successes and new ideas; this year’s event has some changes including a new coordinator, but the integrity of the festival and what makes it so popular, is still in tact,” said Megan McDonald, Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office of Special Events. Additionally, gospel fest-goers will be treated to some new features such as drum lines and praise dancers between sets. Walgreen’s and the National Urban League will promote their Wellness Campaign, which offers on-the-spot free health screenings.
