As the second season of the Black Entertainment Television hit gospel competition kicked off last month, four Chicagoans were vying to be Sunday Best!

Kalind Haynes, Audrey Lewis, Maurice Griffin and Crystal Holland were among 20 contestants competing on the show, now taped in Atlanta, and looking forward to a grand prize that included a gospel recording contract and a 2009 Lincoln MKS sedan.

Griffin surprised the show’s celebrity guest judges, Tina and Erica Campbell – the singing sister-duo Mary Mary–and gospel icon Bebe Winans, when the 22-year-old member of Truth and Deliverance International Ministries sang what became his swan song.

“He sound like he grown, but he look like he’s in elementary (school),” Winans said of Griffin.

Erica Campbell called Griffin a “fantastic singer.”

Holland’s Melodies from Heaven rendition didn’t go over well with the judges.

Tina Campbell said Crystal’s performance, which was her last, was “slightly mechanical.”

Lewis was called “an awesome, awesome instrument” by Tina Campbell.

“It was absolutely an orchestra,” Winans said of the The Merrill Avenue Baptish Church worshippper.

Still, she was bumped out of the competition.

This year’s show quickly paired 20 contestants down to 10. After the cuts, only one Chicagoan remained.
