Former Grambling St. star in Canadian Football Hall

GRAMBLING, La. – Former Grambling State star Elfrid “SWAC” Payton has been inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

GRAMBLING, La.  – Former Grambling State star Elfrid “SWAC” Payton has been inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Grambling announced the honor on Tuesday.

Payton, a defensive end, signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as a free agent in 1991 and was Winnipeg’s nominee for most outstanding rookie that year. In 1993, Payton was the CFL’s leader in sacks with 22, was a CFL All-Star and was awarded the James P. McCaffrey Trophy as most outstanding defensive player in the Eastern Division.

Payton was also a member of the Montreal Alouettes in 1996, where he tied a league record for the most sacks during a game with five against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He also played for the Edmonton Eskimos.
