SPRINGFIELD, Ill.— Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn says the Federal Emergency Management Agency has rated Illinois’ homeland security program among the top four percent nationwide.
Quinn says Illinois received an overall effectiveness score of 91 out of 100. He says the national average was 71.
The FEMA ratings are based on peer reviews that assess the way the state uses funding in response to threats, among other factors.
Illinois’ homeland security program received nearly $33.8 million in federal grants for fiscal 2009. Illinois Emergency Management Agency Director Andrew Velasquez says the money will go in part toward equipping and training more than 90 fire, law enforcement and medical response teams.
