MONROVIA, Liberia — A former Liberian president has been acquitted of pilfering around $1 million from the country’s state-run oil refinery during his time in office. A jury on Thursday evening found Gyude Bryant and four others not guilty of economic sabotage. However, Bryant still faces criminal charges in connection with allegations that he stole $1.3 million from state coffers in a separate case. Bryant headed an interim government between 2003 and 2005 after Liberia’s war and before the election of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Bryant has remained silent since the court’s ruling, but newspapers in Monrovia on Friday published photos of him hugging family members and supporters after the verdict. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press.
