Over the weekend, 63rd Street between Morgan and Halsted Streets in the Englewood community was filled with people enjoying the 2nd annual Englewood Festival.
Ald. JoAnn Thompson (16th) brought the festival to the community for a two-day event Saturday and Sunday.
“I wanted them to understand and see that they can have the same things as other communities. We can have fun in our own community,” Thompson told the Defender.
There were carnival rides, games and vendors lined up along the street, making the event a unique one to the South Side. Festival guests had the opportunity to support local businesses that had booths selling everything from purses and jewelry to hot dogs.
The real treat came in the performances by local recording artists, including DJ Solo, Ben One and Slique.
DJ Solo’s popular song, "Chicken Wang," which has a dance of the same name, can be heard on radio stations throughout the city.
“Chicago needed something of its own, so I decided to do something that’s different and catchy,” DJ Solo told the Defender, explaining why he came up with the song and dance.
Ben One was a crowd favorite among the ladies in the audience. One young fan, Chamaine Graves, 14, got an early birthday present when the singer allowed her to be pulled up onto the stage with him as tears flowed down her face. Ben One first became popular with his hit song from last summer, "Never Leave My Girl."
