Officials have set June 25 as the reopening date for the Empress Casino in Joliet, which was heavily damaged by fire in March. Empress General Manager Frank Quigley said Thursday that regular patrons won’t recognize the renovated facility, which has a new 240-seat buffet, expanded high-limit gaming area and new VIP players lounge. Damage to the casino was estimated at $340 million. Officials say welders working on kitchen duct work sparked the March 20 fire. The casino had been undergoing renovations. The blaze burned for about 12 hours. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
