SPRINGFIELD, Ill.  — The Associated Press has learned that at least 17 Illinois criminals who were part of an early prison release program are back in lockup after arrests for new violent crimes — including attempted murder. An AP review of official and internal Corrections Department documents shows others went back for parole infractions after allegedly committing armed robbery, domestic battery and weapons violations. Gov. Pat Quinn halted the secret "MGT Push" practice and announced prison reforms last week. He acknowledged 56 of the 1,700 inmates released early were back in prison — eight serving sentences for new crimes and 48 having broken parole rules. But he didn’t say what rules were broken. Spokesman Bob Reed says Quinn was told only that the 48 had violated parole, not the nature of the offenses. Copyright 2010 The Associated Press.
