CHICAGO (AP) — Newly released numbers show Chicago’s domestic violence help line logged more than 29,000 calls last year.
The total of 29,641 was down 7 percent from 2009. The highest volume was in August and September, and more than 90 percent of victim callers were females. Victims’ ages averaged 34 but were as young as 1 and as old as 97.
Deputy Commissioner Jennifer Welch says despite the decline, local law enforcement still receives an average of 541 domestic-related help calls each day.
The free help line operates 24 hours, and offers bi-lingual assistance connecting families to domestic violence services. That includes emergency shelter, counseling and legal help.
