DEKALB, Ill. — The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport a grant of nearly $1.4 million. U.S. Rep. Bill Foster announced the grant Thursday. The suburban Chicago Democrat says the funding will create jobs. Airport manager Tom Cleveland says the northern Illinois facility will use the money to buy private land in a runway protection zone. A protection zone is a large area at the end of a runway, and airports need them to control nearby land use. DeKalb Mayor Kris Povlsen says airport improvement can spur economic growth in DeKalb and surrounding communities. The DeKalb airport is about 60 miles west of Chicago. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
