Dear Chat Daddy,
I am a 43-year-old single mother of two who has never met her father. Just recently, I have decided to look for my father to find out why he walked out on my brother and me when we were very young. I need to know why he left us and if we have any other brothers and sisters out there in the world. My mother is totally against it and won’t participate in assisting me whatsoever, which really bothers me. I’ve started to do searches on the Internet in hopes of finding some type of leads on my father. I need to know. I simply can’t move on in my life until I do this and get the closure I need. But it’s driving a wedge between my mother and me. What should I do?
-Where Are You Daddy?
Dear Where Are You Daddy?,
Great letter, my sister. First of all, let me just say that I applaud you for searching for the answers yourself and having the strength and courage to seek clarity. Yes, you do indeed deserve to know the truth. In this day and age of the Internet, trying to find your father might be easier than you think, since your mother will not share any information about him or their past relationship. You must realize it is normal for your mother to feel the way she does since the man left her with two children to raise all by herself. Therefore, she is probably still quite bitter about the situation. However, she is not you, and she does not have your heart. If you do indeed seek out your father, be aware of the fact that you may or may not receive the answers you are looking for. If you do find him, he may not be as receptive to you as you would like him to be so be prepared for anything. The key here is to remain optimistic and positive in every capacity of this endeavor. Be encouraged.
