CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago’s Mayor Richard Daley is embarking on a farewell "Neighborhood Appreciation Tour" in the month before he leaves office.

Daley plans to visit communities all over Chicago and his office says Daley will thank Chicagoans for their help in moving the city forward. Daley leaves office on May 16, when Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel will be sworn in. Daley was elected mayor in 1989.

Daley made his first stop on the tour Monday at a women’s center on the city’s Near West Side which recently underwent a $1 million rehabilitation. The center serves 1,500 women and 300 children annually.

Daley says Chicago residents have worked together to bring the city into the 21st century and "perhaps beyond our greatest expectations."
