The end of the school year is here, and in the wake of the multiple shootings where youths have been victims, the city has revamped initiatives to stop the bloodshed and keep the streets safe. More Chicago police officers will be on the streets, a new gang enforcement team will be deployed and the Mobile Strike Force that fights violence in high-crime areas will get additional officers, among other departmental initiatives, Mayor Richard M. Daley said recently at a news conference at a South Side park. “Our most basic and effective tool in fighting violence is the presence of police personnel on neighborhood streets,” he said. Between 400-500 officers on desk duty will be sent in the field for the summer. In addition, 148 officers will stay in the field permanently. During citywide events, about 45 police recruits will assist with security efforts. To help keep children in safe activities, the mayor reminded the public about the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategies (CAPS) new sports program called C.I.T.Y. (Cops Interacting and Targeting Youth). Officers and community volunteers are paired with students for various sports and mentoring sessions. He also said many paid summer jobs are available with the City for youths between ages 14 and 24. The application deadline is June 19., www.youthreadychicago.org, or 877-587-9675. Daley also stressed the city’s curfew for youths under age 17: Sunday through Thursday is 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday is 11 p.m. “Summer should be a carefree time for young people. But I can’t emphasize this strongly enough: It’s not up to the police to keep our kids out of trouble this summer. It’s up to every one of us,” he said. ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender.
