OAK BROOK, Ill. — A group of suburban Chicago middle school students and their chaperones have escaped safely after a tour bus they were riding in caught fire and was later engulfed in flames.
Illinois State Police District Sgt. Paul Carlos says the bus was on a tollway near Oak Brook Thursday when a small brake fire broke out. Pat Dwyer, principal of Virgil I. Grisson Middle School in Tinley Park, says the children were eighth graders on a trip to a nearby Six Flags Great America.
Carlos says state police responded and helped the 47 students and staff off the bus. He says a crew used an extinguisher to put the fire out.
Minutes later, the entire bus burst into flames. Carlos says the bus was destroyed by the time fire crews from Oak Brook put out the blaze.
