Joyce Owens is an artist, writer and curator. She lives art. Owens is known for her paintings, sculptural works and masks. Some of her work will be present at Thursday’s 2014 Harlem Fine Arts Show.

Owens said she typically doesn’t participate in art fairs, but couldn’t sit this one out. “I generally don’t do art fairs, but when I was asked to be apart of this, I looked at the history and said I couldn’t miss this, especially with it being in my hometown.”

The opening night reception will be held at The Merchandise Mart at 222 Merchandise Mart Plaza. The reception will benefit the South Side Community Art Center, where Owens currently has an exhibition. The DuSable Museum of African American History is also a recipient.

Publishers from some of Chicago’s major Black newspapers will be honored at the reception. For those who attend, they will be entertained with live jazz. Beverages and hors d’oeuvres will also be available. Tickets are $150.

Owens, who earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree from Yale University, said that often, she finds inspiration in things that “infuriate” her, such as stereotypes that Black people are still given. Work never stops for her because she is always working on something new.

“Art is what I do. I make art because I can’t stop myself. I don’t do it because I have shows or I’m getting commission, it’s just what I do,” she said.
