CHICAGO (AP) — Officials with Chicago Public Schools say a veteran employee working to keep at-risk youth out of gangs was among those recently honored.
Khaldun Everage has been with Chicago schools for two decades. He works in the district’s community and family engagement unit and is a certified gang specialist.
He was honored as an "Everyday Hero" by groups including the Chicago Urban League.
Officials say 30 people were given the award last week. They included teachers, mentors and clergy members.
School officials say Everage exemplifies the type of person who can make a difference in the lives of children.
Chicago Public Schools is the nation’s third largest school district with about 410,000 students.
